• I was getting ready to get into the trails and this guy pulled up and backed his cargo van into part of the trail. I drop a pin and let my family know what trailhead I’m using when I’m in Maine solo. I did the same thing here. I don’t know who this van guy was.

The trail experience was not so hot either. I think I entered at the wrong spot . But it was grown over, swamped out and full of dead falls. I found a cool downhill section but was lost everywhere else. This was Allamuchy State Park, I heard it’s good so I probably went too a neglected trailhead

Using my keen skills of deduction I concluded there are game preserves with active hunting happening in many sections of the state. This explains why the fire roads are unridden. I rode up this one on official business with a hi/viz vest on. I have no idea when hunting season is but I’m not trying to get blasted Dick Cheney style,

There’s also miles of private roads and driveways .

I think most people here are more bark than bite but why test that theory?

With that caveat out there check out this cool old bridge off a private road.

I stayed around this lake in a couple of hotels. I really didn’t know there was a Lakes district in NJ but there is, it’s in the area of by Stanhope NJ where me and Guza saw Lollapslooza 1 on different days. At my show Siouxsee was sick and didn’t perform, For some reason Skatemaster Tate announced this with some DJs from an “alternative” radio station, At Guza’s show Siouxsee did play but skatemaster tate did not make a guest appearance. I’m sure both shows had similar mosh pits with shirtless college jocks pushing each other and some rando metalheads thrashing all around, and a few mall punks with liberty spikes pogo’ing to Body Count,

Good luck getting vegan food in this zone. I found some General Tso’s fake chicken at a regular Chinese place and had a pretty busted burrito at some other place in a round strip mall. This picture is a detail of the window of a health food store. It was an old school health food store with rows of vitamins and supplements and then a tiny kitchen set up with macrobiotic quinoa, fish guts and kelp burgers with carob fig rice balls sweetened with beet juice for desert,

My brakes went out while I was going around a curve. The vacuum pump that controls the brakes on this 4×4 setup died entirely, if it had happened the previous week it would have been unfortunate for me as I went careening off a cliff.

This cow stopped by to laugh at me while I waited for the tow truck, he was like “yo what happened?” then I said “I don’t know the brakes went out. He said “damn that’s fucked up I didn’t even know that really happened.”

  • Lost in NJ Woods

I’m related to this guy, at least my grandfather thought so and spent a lot of time in his later years working on genealogy . Apparently the hatred of hessians was passed down through many generations peaking in the 1980s around the time of the “Monsters of Rock” tour.
NJ is full of woods and abandoned houses.
    There’s also abandoned buses .
There’s a lot of dirt roads, some of them are private and dead end others connect
If you visit the New Hope, PA/Lambertville, NJ area someone put together a nice 50 mile 3k all gravel and dirt road ride
    Gravelmaps.com

Gravel Maps dot Com is a great resource . Check it out.

While on the ride stop into legendary cycling shop Wheelfine Imports to see some Italian bikes. there’s a real nice rolling drop next to the shop-it’s a mission to climb back up.
Traveling north through the western sections of central and north Jersey will take you into a more mountainous zone.
The lower zone hits about 550 ft of elevation but contains some ridiculous grades and short brutal climbs.
The upper part of the state contains a portion of the Adirondack mountain range hitting around 1500 ft as the highest point. Driving on Route 80 is a rolling experience.
This area has lakes and mountains creating grades to enhance your climbing and descending experience,
There’s no shortage of abandoned houses up here.
There’s sanctioned and unsanctioned mtb terrain . This corner is unsanctioned single track through a wildlife preserve.
Some grow over happening , but there’s still fresh tire tracks.
Sometimes you just have to look at things to see the openings
    Nobody was home.
This is a good way to spend a Saturday…
    … when you’re not exploring .

I’ll update this as things progress.
